Lawn Aeration

Lawn aeration is a process to let air, water and nutrients into the soil and to relieve heavy compaction.

What are the different types?

Hollow Tine Aeration, Solid Tinning and Spiking are the most common types.

Spiking is often preferred, as numerous passes can be made with no cores to collect or disruption to the lawn.

Hollow Tine or Core involves the removal of soil/thatch cores from the lawn.

The main benefits of this method would be to remove heavy thatch, before top dressing.

As this method leaves larger holes, it is easier to work in top dressing through the holes and into the root zone profile.

Why should I aerate my lawn?

  • Relieves soil compaction
  • Releases toxic chemicals
  • Increases biological activity
  • Encourages root prunes
  • Helps water penetration
  • Assists nutrient efficiency
  • Improves surface drainage
  • Allows air into the root zone
  • Penetrates sub surface thatch
  • Reduces moss infestation

Lawn Top Dressing

If you do this before lawn top dressing it helps improve the soil structure, as the top dressing fills the holes created.
